Writer | Worldbuilder | Storyteller
My name is JP, and I’m a writer from the United States. The words above aren’t a description so much as an ideal that I’m trying to reach. If there were words to describe the role I want to play in this world, it would be these ones.
You’ve happened to stumble across what’s essentially my progress journal on my path to reach that ideal. This is my notebook, my soap box, my sketchbook, and my diary. I’m an overthinker with an ego, who also gets attached to things quickly, and that tidy little combo means that I have a lot of ideas, the nerve to think they’re good, and emotional attachment to them. Naturally, that meant those thoughts needed a home, and I type faster than I write, so here we are!
As a writer, I’m still learning. I know that one doesn’t get good at a skill without a mind-numbing amount of study and practice, so from this point onward, this is where I’ll keep the record of my efforts. You’ll find my thoughts on stories from all sorts of media, philosophy, interpersonal relationships, and probably some snippets from my life. And writing, of course. You’re gonna see a lot about my thoughts on writing. Both about the process, and about samples of my own work. You’ve caught my website and I in our fledgling stage, so you have the uniquely sublime opportunity to witness whether it withers and dies, grows into a respectable sprout, or blooms into a behemoth that nobody could have anticipated. Personally, I’m hoping for that last one.
But anyway, if seeing a stranger’s thoughts on those things interests you, then you’re absolutely welcome to visit, check in from time to time, or even stick around, if you’re so inclined. I’m glad to have the company!
Your Time
I’m a big believer in being strategic about where and how you spend your time, and I want you to know and feel that I respect yours. I’m going to do my very best to make my articles and posts thoughtful, informative, and entertaining. Probably in that order, if things go as planned. Becoming a writer that I can be proud of is the mountain that I’m here to climb, and I know that there are a lot of people who are on similar journeys. I’ve already been helped by so many people in my own life, and hopefully this workspace can be my tool to help others who might need it. With that said, I hope that what you find here will nudge you in the directions you need to go. There’s more to come!
Dare to Be Flawed
I have a very loud internal editor, and it might be my truest nemesis. It’s greatest victory has been to repeatedly convince me that, not only is my work not good enough to share, but that each piece must be perfected before I can move on to the next. It made me believe that I was making progress when I was actually just spinning in place. I can’t think of a more sinister way to hinder a person.
With that in mind, one of my major goals is to rewire my brain to be okay with having my progress be messy. So long as each step is a true step forward, I’ll learn to cage that internal editor until I’m ready for it to attack a finished product.
